. . . . .

A winter forecast through the folklore of the Wooly Bear Caterpillar.

They say that the center cinnamon colored band predicts the upcoming winter. The band on this one seems wide, so if folktale is right the winter should be mild. Or another view says that this little guy is just more mature than some others of his kind. I think that I like the folklore in this case and look for a mild winter season.

I just about missed ‘wooly bear’ on the walkway at Crosswinds Marsh. I walked right past him. Dale came along and walked with me this time and called me back to see what I missed.

Thanks for looking in!

What a gorgeous shot with the texture of the catarpillar and the wood. I’m glad Dale pointed him out to you, Susan!

I am with you Susan…I like the idea of a mild winter here in southern NH. Of course they can have as much snow as they need up north in the mountains (or any of the other ski areas) as long as that it where it stays.

I just saw a Wooly Bear that looked identical to your picture just under the cover of my bulk head as I was getting things prepared for the winter season.

    Great picture:-)

Just this morning I found a Wooly Bear caterpillar in my backyard. It was the middle of winter! It must have come out due to the 60 degree waether yesterday. It was cold and frozen, but I knew somehow that it wasn’t quite dead yet. I poked it gently and it stirred weakly. I brought it inside and warmed it in a dish with a container of boiling hot water underneath it. It began to move around! I fed it some baby spinach and it seems to be okay now. It eats frequently and moves around a lot more. I plan to realese it into the wild when the warn spring waether returns.
